Working smarter

Lease extraction needs a review step. Here is what to check.

A practical sequence for taking proposed terms back to the source before filing.

Check the document set.

Start with the lease and any relevant amendments. Confirm that you are reviewing the intended property, unit, and parties. A summary of the wrong document can be internally tidy and still be unusable.

Verify the dates and amounts.

Review commencement and end dates, rent, deposit, and other proposed terms against the original. Use the surrounding clause, not an isolated number, to decide what the source actually says.

Confirm the relationships.

Match the proposed parties to the appropriate contacts, property, unit, and tenancy record. Similar names or addresses need a deliberate check before confirmation.

Keep the source available.

File the confirmed information with its supporting document and related records. When a later question refers to a deposit or an amended term, the the document or photo should still be available to inspect.

Separate terms from transactions.

A lease term describes an obligation. It does not prove that rent was collected or that a deposit was returned. Keep document interpretation and transaction history distinct in the process.
